This is something that I don't *love* to talk about because I feel bad and dumb about it but.. I am currently a smoker. Not for long though. I started smoking when I was a teenager and camel no.9s were pink and cute and fun and OF COURSE I thought I would never ever become addicted to them. Yeah... about that. I'm now 23, way out of college and decidedly old enough to know that smoking is not cute, not fun and actually super embarrassing at this point. Not to mention a total drain on my dwindling bank account. So here's what I'm (attempting?) doing and crossing my fingers and praying to the smoking gods that it works. First of all, I have a boyfriend (who is lovely and amazing) who recently quit smoking, so that is a huge help because he is who I spend the majority of my time with and most of my friends are ex smokers or have never been smokers. Boom, cuts out a lot of temptation right there.
These tips don't sound like much, but in my other attempts, they have really helped. You have to get yourself in the right mindset to do this. If you're at the point where you WANT to want to quit, you're already halfway there. You can do it.. and so can I.
- I have been weighing the pros and cons of quitting in my head every single day (spoiler: the only pro is having an excuse to get away from conversations at bars with people you went to high school with but don't like/never liked/can't even really remember who they are).
- I'm also picking up some new hobbies. Focusing your mind on something other than smoking is great because if you can truly engrossed in something, you truly won't think about cigarettes. For me, I picked up my first set of tarot cards and found an awesome online course on learning to read them.
- Remind yourself of all of the benefits of quitting. Your health. Your skin. Your hair. YOUR BANK ACCOUNT.
- When you are having an especially horrible craving, treat yo self. A nice cup of coffee or tea will do the trick. Relax with it, sip slowly and remind yourself that you're doing something positive. You may feel like murdering now, but eventually you'll just be thankful that you opened your eyes and saw smoking for what it really is: harmful, gross and a waste of money.
